Usually, with hang on back filter, you want your filtration to cycle at least 8-10x the volume of your tank. Kind of sounds like you don't have enough beneficial bacteria in your filter to handle your bioload. I have 2 off brand canister filters that work really good and cost the same as a good HOB. I feel that canister filters are far superior to the hang on back kind. You might want to look in to adding another filter.
