Before spending money unnecessarily, check with your local water supply people if you are on municipal water (and not your own well). They may have a website, with data posted, or they should be able to tell you. You want the GH which is general hardness, and the KH which is carbonate hardness or Alkalinity. The latter influences pH.

Once you know these numbers, unless you intend adjusting the water, there would be no further use for a GH/KH kit. A pH test is worth having though.
