For upper fish, stay with quiet rather than boisterous (active swimmers) as these can annoy gourami which are quiet sedate fish. The rasbora (medium-sized species) work well here, and there are some suitable tetra. The Cherry Barb
are fine, but about the only barb that should be combined with gourami due to the activity issue, as the other barbs (along with the danios) are all very active. There are several rasbora speciesin our profiles (under the Cyprinids section), and tetra are under Characins. With the latter, as well as the activity, watch out for fin nippers, as many even though normally peaceful with become nippers in the presence of gourami.
