Starting a new tank again!

Ok now I used to keep fish a few years back. I used to keep alot of different types of fish. Only never had a reef tank but did have saltwater. I used to like having a planted tank but too much to maintain. Well this is my dilemma I have 2 tanks 1 is a 46 gallon bow black tank and the other is a 45 gallon regular oak tank. Both have nice stands but don't know which one I would like to go with the 45 gallon is 30" long and the 46 is 36" long. Ok well this is what I would like to know. I have absolutely no equipment at all except the tank. I've been out of the market for a while and would like to know what is good for this tank. This is what I was thinking so far a 305 fluval canister filter (would an overhead filter be fine or just go with the canister?), I see that new style lighting they got the satellite compact flourescent fixtures that i want to get. What air pump should I get? What heater should I get? As of what kind of fish I want to keep yet I do not know just want to get the basics also am I missing some other supplies that I need besides chemicals and conditioners. I just want to know the main stuff first and work from there. Thanks in advance

What will you be putting in the tank as far as livestock? Plants? When determining what you need to the tank as far as filtration, lighting, substrate, ect, one must first plan one what is going into the tank. That is step #1. Some do set the tank up then select the fish to matc h he set up, but I find it much easier to select the stocking plan first. You will find that you will have less heartache when you find a fish that you want and can't get it because you tank isn't set up to keep it.

well is there going to be a difference if in terms of filter and air supply if i were to get Goldfish or Discus? I was thinking of doing a pair of Discus only.
