sponge filter placement, will plants get in the way?

Hi peeps,

i'm working out the layout on a 10 gallon tank, and was thinking about putting the sponge filter in the middle. A simple airpump attaches itself into the filter and serve to drive the water in and out.

i'd like to cover up the filter with an island of java ferns attached to driftwood. i'm aiming to grow a mini-forest in the middle...but will this somehow impede the filter's operation?

Below is a sketch of the layout. As i've never been good at drawing, i implore you to use copious amounts of your imagination :D

The plants are fine, just don't have them or the wood/rock touching the sponge. A slight space for clearance is best.

I was going to suggest moving the sponge filter to a rear corner, but then it occurred to me that this seems to be a Hydro sponge and they do not have a directional flow stem like the Elite. I have a Hydro. So centered is probably good, as it will pull water from the substrate in and push it out the top.

thanks! i'll try to post some photos once i get around to setting it up. Still looking for a base for the tank :p
