species for a 10 gallon..?

i have an empty ten gallon aquarium, i have no equipment or anything yet, im planning on making it around a species or two? i have a 12 gallon planted community and a 55 african cichlid tank so i would want something different, i was thinking a species tank or maybe two small species... i kinda wanted a pair or trio of something or perhaps small cichlids.. i would wanted to know almost all the possibilities for a ten gallon stocking and how i should decorate it.. and id really like something odd, basically what you couldnt find at petsmart for example.. i was also considering a saltwater nano, but wanted to know what my freshwater or/and brackish options are.

a few ideas i came up with, anyone feel free to give opinions if good or not

pair of sajicas?
pair of dwarf pikes?
trio of dwarf puffers?
pair of gracilis?
pair of rams?
trio of badis?
2 leaf fish?
few shelldwellers?
trio of syno petricola and some other unique nano fish?

all suggestions are helpful!!! and ill consider all advice!

3 dwarf puffers in a heavily planted tank!






One of my few fish that aren't scared off by my kid at feeding time. They come right out to the front of the tank. They love live white worms, and they'll play a tug of war, each clamping on to one end and shaking. Awesome fish.

You could get an Axolotl. They are adorable and I've heard they only need a 10 gallon tank. However, If you did decide to get one, do be aware that you can't have any other fish in the tank because they will either become food, or they will nibble on the Axolotls gills.

They need cold water. Colder than most keep their houses.

54-68 degrees, with 63-64 being best.

Very interesting creature, but a bit expensive too with having to run a chiller.

Several of the listed fish are cichlids, and a 10g is insufficient space for any cichlid except for the shell dwellers, a group of five wold work.

Leaf fish need more spece.

There are some lovely "dwarf" fish in the cyprinids and badids, and a few anabantids. Depends upon your water parameters, as many of these (but not all) need very soft water.

The Betta idea is actually quite fun and you can always track down a rare or exotic breed of Betta. Inverts are pretty cool. Like Loaches, Shrimp, and Snails. Tetras can be agressive, but they can work in a species tank. Cory Cats are lots of fun and plent of variety there. Just some ideas you might like to look into

What about about a catfish tank with cories and upside-down catfish?

Or a strict biotope, with 1-2 species of plants, and a single fish species?

Or an invert tank with nerite snails, a cpo, a variety of dwarf shrimp, and a aquascape of moss-covered driftwood?

Badis and scarlet badis are nice fish, but you could also consider:
A breeding pair of dwarf gourami
A large school (8-10) of nano fish like the micro rasbora
A local biotope of only local plants and a few minnows
A "crabitat" with fiddler crabs, brackish water, and a beach for them to burrow in
