GBRs aren't anywhere near as aggressive as tiger barbs.

An african butterfly would not work well with tiger barbs - those dangling rays are too inviting. I tried keeping mine with rosy barbs, and the temptation was too much for them.

i put 11 tiger barbs in there, i know i shouldn't really cycle the tank with the barbs, but i figured with the plants, and the fact that i will do water changes if i see the level get too high i should be good.

maybe i will go with a smaller cat, and possible add some neons...

or i could get some dwarf cichlids, like the Bolivian Ram...or something else that will not get to big.


attached is a pic with the tank setup, the banana plants, lillys, and the green grass stuff to the left is all real plants. the red ones, and small looking one near the purple-ish rocks are fake.

It looks really nice! Are you planning on replaceing the fake ones with some more real ones eventually?

i've never seen the little guys to the left real, and the red either for that matter. i'm not even sure what they are called. if i ever came across them at any of the local pet stores i would definitely consider it.

what i am probably going to do is get some more of the taller red style to really fill it up back there.

The red one you are talking about is Ludwigia Palustris plant. I have never seen it at any of the local stores around here but you can order it from some where like sweetaquatics.com. They have it for $1.35 a bunch which is 6-8 stems. It would need high light and nutrient rich gravel to get the red color.
I can't see the little one on the left well enough to try to tell you what it is.

i figured as much for achieving the color. may just stick with the plastic ones...

here's a bit better of a shot of the smaller ones. (but i assume the same for achieving the color...)
