if you have the room in the filetr then yea theres nothing wron g with adding some more surface for bac to live on in a concentrated area.

Using the carbon that came with the filter for the first few days won't hurt. You did mention live plants in the first post, so I would not add any bubblers or powerheads. Both will work against the plants.
