sand? small rock? big rock?

in my new tank, im thinking about a mix of sand and smaller rock. the rock will be white. im curious if there is a particular sand to get? something available at petsmart or any other pet store. is this a good mix?

Any sand avaliable from a petstore sold as for use in a tropical aquaruim should be fine. I do like the black sand and white rock look gives a nice contrast.

my thought is to keep all the rock/sand light colors to help the fish stand out more. plan is for tigers. i had them in a tank with a darker rock mix and i didnt care to much for it.... so im gonna try the opposite.

there will also be some assorted plants (mostly fake). and some rock setup that allows for a shelter/cave type setup.

depends on the fish you get fish like neons look ace against a dark background and dark fish would lose definition agaist the same backdrop and vice versa beware of pet smart because they do sell some utter junk at times especily beware of the painted gravel there are several types of inert natral sands to chose from ranging from black to red the only white sand ive seen is coral sand which is not inert and will harden the water

thanks. im going to be looking around alot on this idea. i found some lighter sand that isnt coral sand. dont worry though, i wont be using painted rock. the rock that i have used from them has done well in my 10G. dont recall the brand it was.

i had some painted sand from petsmart a got with a small tank i purchased for my apisto babies the sand/gravel came with but i didnt use it as i wanted a bare tank i put it around one of the houseplants(waste not ) and it disitergrated just by getting wet god knows what it would do underwater

any idea on the brand? i have used topfin and some other brand. dont recall what though

that is the kind of sand im thinking about using, only in white.
