There are two ways to start the cycle that needs to begin for your fish to be able live healthily in your tank. The first way you can start the cycle is with placing a fish or a few into a running and setup tank. The fish will secrete ammonia through there waste and good bacteria will grow from it and end up turning the ammonia(which is lethal to fish) into nitrites(also lethal but not as much as ammonia) and then into nitrates( also lethal but only if there is a mass buildup of it). The other way you can do it is to not put fish in the tank and only drop in fish food(i dont know how often) to start the cycle. Fish food turns into ammonia and the process begins the same way as if you began it with fish. Finally that plant would survive in the tank as there would be nutrients available for it. Read up more on it. I wrote this quickly and only meant to give an introduction on the matter oh and welcome to the forum, its great | Yes, welcome!!!
mcb5522 is very right!
I have never cycled my tanks with fish food, but I have with fish.
The only thing I can think to add is that when picking a fish to cycle your tank with is to get a hardy species of fish that have the ability to survive a cycle.
Good luck with your aquarium!!!
