I'm laying here listening to the occasional car drive past, periodic trains going much slower than usual, and sirens in the distance. Nice in a way if I wasn't so worried about what comes next. Sigh.

Thanks tkm, it was terrible. I heard DC has a bunch of trees down & power outages?

The infrastructure around here just isn't made for hurricane force winds. The trees just don't bend enough and the local utilities don't always trim limbs back enough to help.

I'm laying here trying to decide which fish I might like to try to take with me if I end up needing to leave my house.

I'm an hour and a half north of columbus and we got hammered here, my powers still out and we have several huge trees down by the park. If your in the city I would bet you'll be back up on the grid well before i am so maybe just wait it out... but betas are ment to be survivors, how long do you think they live in those little cups at the pet store for?

I really hope so, but the last estimate for my part of town is July 7.

There are still almost 200,000 customers without power just in Franklin County.

They're now saying that this is a "catastrophic" incident, and is worse than when the remains of Hurricane Ike blew through back in 2008.

It goes to show the power of mother nature. The 10 year storm from yesterday unfortunately claimed the lives of 13 people.

Please Please if you live in an area effected by severe weather, take shelter when it approaches or when sirens go off. It really is a pet hate of mine being a weather observer and trained CanWarn spotter seeing people walking casually with an umbrella in a thunderstorm. Fact people, Lightening can and sometimes does strike from OVER 20 miles away from the thunderhead cloud.

Remember as well to keep a stock of food in the house not only for you but also your pets to survive for up to 5 days in the event of a major disaster such as a tornado or very very severe thunderstorm. It really DOES NOT take much on your part but it can mean the difference between life and death.

Being a CanWARN spotter and very knowledgeable on weather, a fast moving thunderstorm can be on you in about 10 minutes from when you see the dark clouds approaching. The warnings they put out are there to protect you and give you as much time to seek shelter as possible.

I am sure things will be back to normal for you soon. If that had happened in Canada then coming up to Canada Day (National Holiday) tomorrow and Monday it would be different. It will all get sorted. As people have mentioned, the bettas are one (if not debateably the hardiest fish), they do have to survive in those little cups for potentially their entire lifespan. Keep an eye on them ad things will all work out for you.

You are totally right Taz.

I had noticed the dark clouds and I think we all hoped for a little rain. I checked the radar on my phone and it wasn't too bad, yet.

When I heard thunder I tuned into the local news and they were warning folks of "egg sized hail." Then I saw them point out the strong bow echo and one of the meteorologists said something in the background about 50 mph winds.

I'm the local weather nut in my family so I grabbed the cordless to call my sister who lives out in the country and gets spotty reception at best. I left her a message while moving to close the front door and it was on us. Howling winds pushing through the (closed) windows and knocking the blinds around.

The power stuttered about 3 times and that was that.

It was super quick and not much advanced notice that it was coming.

I have been lax in keeping emergency rations, other than water which I usually have on hand, but I'm gonna work on some kind of kit. Thankfully a couple of stores were open today and had fully stocked shelves, but a week from now who knows what will be available. My closest store is without power, and lost all their frozen items. It's craziness!

BTW, my BF loved that time lapse radar of the storm you posted. Really neat!
