Possible issues with tap water?

The school I go to is over 200 years old, and the pipes haven't been replaced since the school was built. I'm always scared that a lot of trace metals can be in the water, which I'm scared will hurt my fish.
Are there any tests for this kind of stuff? My school isn't the best at disclosing safety issues to students (the largest dorm on campus didn't pass fire codes for 2 years... the only reason they fixed it was because they threatened to close down the dorm), so if I were to ask them what water conditions were, they'd laugh at me.

If the pipes are original with the building, they are probably lead. But I can't imagine that being let go, knowing what we do now about lead poisoning. Copper pipes were used more recently, but now I believe there is something even better but I can't remember what. Check this out.

Chances are, the mineral would be what we term a trace amount, otherwise it would be deadly for drinking. A good water conditioner that detoxifies heavy metals will handle this.
