Please help Swordtail Dying...

Hey So I added two new swordtails into my 20 gal tank and I checked the search and didnt find what i needed so I'm adding it here. I have a male swordtail and 2 royal blue gourami's and they seem to be doing great and have been together for 2 months now. I added 2 female swordtails cuz I was told the male will harass one and stress her to much if I don't do this so having 2 will offload the stress.

Anyway so One female swordtail has taken to the male awesomely. I havent seen the male this active in forever and they are always together. The other is in bad shape... When we got her she was timid as is but two days ago we checked her and her fins looked chewed. Today I checked her and it almost seems like her whole back fin is gone so I dont know what happened. Is she sick or did the other swordtails attack her? And should I leave her be or is there a way I could help her die or regrow her fin or something?... I hate seeing her suffer as much as she is right now...

sorry to hear about your swordtail being harrassed.

before I guessed the swordtail being at fault, my guess would be your gouramis, by Royal Blue? do you mean blue dwarf or a regular blue? blue gourami's can be territorial and a little aggresive....

I heard that gourami's are territorial but these ones are not and they aren't touching the other two swordtails at all. And when I looked them up they are apparently timid.

Looks like its fin rot. I looked all over the internet and found similar photos of whats happening. I didn't expect it to happen so fast but its what it is. Her tail is really inflamed and it almost looks like its bleeding. Now I just hope its not contagious.

From what I understand it's not, but it can still can be.... if that makes any sense... you have to make sure you to keep the water changes done and everything up to par to keep the other fish healthy, and stress free, this is what mostly causes the fin rot, stress and the water condition's their is some med's you can use for fin rot, and I found a web page that might help www.petfish.net/articles/bettas/finrot.php Good Luck!

thanks for the help Hi fins. The link isnt working right now so ill try it again later tomorrow. She passed away earlier today i guess from all the trauma and inflammation coupled with not eating.. . Ive been staying with daily water changes for a few weeks now so i feel like its not the water thats causing it. Anyway I've added 3 guppy's today and I'll be keeping a close eye on all my fish for the next few weeks to see if the fin rot is gonna happen to any of them. 2 guppys are adult males and one is a baby (came by accident). Gonna keep a real close eye on them and hope this isn't something I put on them. New tanks and new to this whole thing causes a lot of stress... on me...
