Is this plastic safe for aquarium? Need to seal off glass canopies?

I have glass canopies I need to seal off the back of. The strips made for it aren't available locally so I need to make something myself. I have new Sterilite container lid I thought I could cut into strips and fix on the glass. I know the water will build up then drip off of it, I don't want it to poison the water. It's made of white plastic and smells strong plastic smell. Does anyone know if it would be safe to use? If not what could I buy locally from a home building store?

I'm not exactly sure which plastics are absolutely safe and which ones are but most consumer made plastics are usually pretty safe if they are used around the house, in fact I'm using a sterillite container to store water for my auto top off and no fish deaths.

I wouldn't be afraid to use it - many DIY sump filters are made with sterlite bins.
