I had laying around, reptile moss (no chemicals added, Zoo med brand) and put it in my aquarium more as decoration to fill a hole in wood. I've since taken it out, but there was no harm to my fish. I recently took that same product and did an experiment, because I need to lower my ph in one of my tanks. I tested the water out of tap and got 7.8 Than I put moss in a cup and tested the water in the cup and it went to 6.3! So, I put some moss in a mesh bag and put it in my filter. Now with such a huge concentration of water to a bit in a bag, I didn't see a drop, but it can't hurt! I just don't know how long it's effective. I'd be interested in if others have tried peat moss.
