I used our meat thermometer to check the water initially (forgot to get a tank unit)... I caught a little hell from my wife but it worked fine. I still use it to check the water temp of the fresh water at water changes, it's handy and, because it's digital, easy and quick to read.... it also agrees with my digital tank thermometer now that I put one in there too. I've never been fond of mercury or liquid thermometers and don't have any faith in a stick on type, not as absolute as I like.

You don't really want to know all the problems (mistakes). But, here are a couple - I accidently way over dosed the ammonia in fishless cycle. That started to kill all the plants. Did massive WC. Most of the plants recovered. No fish yet.The ammonia OD pushed the Nitrates way up. I didn't realize that and started stocking. Lost 2 platys & 2 tetras. Another massive WC, God, I love WC (not). Did a couple more WC. Then found massive number of snails. Then got a lot algae. Still struggling with the snails. Mostly cleaned up the algae. Have fun.

Well, its been a while but probably about time for an update. How is everyone? What has been going on in your lives? Anything exciting?

Lots has been happening here. Firstly, I moved house last week. =) I was a bit worried on how it would affect the fish with the moving and all but they all arrived safely and have settled in well.

Since we last spoke, I have added some guppies to my tank that I got from a friends garden pond. The
seven made a home in my tank about a month or a bit more ago and are getting along well with my loaches and my one Cherry Barb. For the move, I bagged the Cherry Barb and guppies and lowered the water to about an inch off the sand surface (just enough to keep sand and plants wet). I was also going to bag the loaches but when I contemplated having to catch them, well I figured chasing them around the tank for an hour to bag them would be more stressful than just moving them while they were in the tank, so in the tank they stayed. When we arrived at the new place (only half an hour away), I added 10L of water each day, until the last day when I added 20L until the tank was full again.

Oh also after the move I also removed the larger driftwood piece from the tank. I don't think it was the cause of my algae problems but I think it definately enabled it. Prehaps it wasn't the right sort of driftwood for an aquarium?

Have also not used Stability for several months and the fish dont seem to mind =)

I have not done a huge amount of research into 'fixing' my tank, more taking the approach of if I don't meddle, I can't make it worse. I have also decided to only get things that will do ok in my tank as it is rather than trying to change my tank to meet the needs of the fish I want. Moving to the new place means that the temp is now on 30-31C instead of 32-33C all the time, which is not ideal but is an improvement =)

In other news, one of my guppies had babies!! Six that I found and removed from the tank. I gave them to a friend who will raise them =)

And my last bit of news. My baby turned 4 last weekend and I was so busy moving house that I did not even remember his birthday until 11am that day!! Not like me at all, I usually have something planned weeks in advance. And to top it off, it was 11am and no one had even fed him breakfast yet. Anyway here he is on his birthday. He got spoils later and absolutely loves the new place so he forgave me =)

Found another baby Guppy in the tank! Very excited and hoping he survives =)
