It wont have live plants, and my pet shop isn't open today... is there some sort of chemical i can buy at lets say walmart that will help? Water conditioner?

Can i transfer the water from the 5 gallon since that water has sustained the fish for about a week now? It would dilute the tap water?

I don't know what Walmart in the US carries. You need water conditioner if you are using tap water, to deal with chlorine, etc. But this has nothing to do with the cycling aspect.

This has little value. I explained in post # about the bacteria on surfaces.

I still do not advise moving the fish at all, yet. The 5g tank has not fully cycled after just a week with fish, and this is stressful enough on them. Moving them into an even newer tank will only make it worse. Unless that tank is properly cycled.

Cycling means there are live plants, or a colony of bacteria, or both present. Whichever, this will take up the ammonia which is toxic.

Ok, im using non- chlorinated well water, will i still need the conditioner? Ok ill set the 10 gallon up and let it run non-stop with no fish in it, and see if i can buy some floating plants tomorrow when the pet store is open.

Ill start the cycling with the "food" practice.

Good. With well water, you probably don't need a conditioner. The only reason i say "probably" is that well water might contain nitrates (esp in agricultural areas) and possibly metals like iron, copper, etc., depending upon the rock it flows through underground.

i am not sure if you are near a walmart but i know here they sell a kit for 30 dollars that is a 10 gallon. i am not 100% sure what it comes with but i know it is the tank and hood...and just that alone is worth it. my hood broke and for a replacement hood they want $35 just for that....

Lol yeah, thats the Kit i got :D It comes with a hood and an aqua tech 5-15 filter

awesome! i bought that tank for my daughter's first tank. i still have the tank and the hood. the filter lasted about a year then i upgraded it. i am still happy with the purchase :P

i am running an aquaclear filter for up 10-30 gallons. i like it. works great and has lasted longer then the filter that came with the tank. i am running the same brand on my 60 tank and i love it. thinking of switching my 20 gallon tank over to one also. lol. makes it easy when i need to add carbon and when i need to clean the filter it's so much easier. word of advice...don't get the bio wheel style filters... i have one and i HATE IT! it's the one on my 20 and i am looking into getting rid of it asap. going to swap it out for something better.
