Hey everyone, here's an update:
I got back from the lfs (actually not local anymore, about 10-15 miles out), and had spent $90 on aquarium stuff yesterday. I got 2 albino oscars, food for them, more water conditioner, plant additive (not really fertilizer, just stuff you add to the water), several Amazon swords, a white ribbon plant, a moss ball (I've always wanted one), a couple of tropica fern plants (thought I was getting
Java Fern at the store - does anyone know if these are the same thing pretty much?), and another plant that I forget its name right now. The oscars are now swimming happily around their huge tank that they have all to themselves, and will follow you along the tank as you walk by. They are about 2" long each, and will sometimes hide under a plant or piece of driftwood if they're scared. They are learning to take food from my hand and to eat shrimps and pellets.
Does anyone know of good tankmates for oscars? I don't want anything that might kill them if they try to swallow it, like the catfish and clown loaches, that have retractable spines, or anything that will get eaten. I was thinking maybe a BGK? It could fend for itself and would grow at a considerably faster rate than the oscars, although they are already too big to be eaten by all but the largest mouthed BGK. I would also like a bottom feeder to help with algae on driftwood and places the scraper can't reach. Maybe a Farlowella catfish? Do those have spines on their sides?
