By the way, nitrates are not a concern unless the reading is very high. Nitrate is the third part of the nitrification cycle (ammonia, then nitrite--both highly toxic, then nitrate). You say one of the "nitrates" was also high; it is the ammnia and nitrite you must keep at "0" once the tank is cycled. With regular (weekly) partial water changes of 30-40% you will keep nitrates down, and if there are plants in the tank all the better; it is only when something biological is seriously out of whack that one sees nitrates above 10-20 in a planted aquarium.
