New into the fish world!

Hi everyone.

I am currently a sophomore in college, and recently I won two comet goldfish from a game in school. Refusing to throw them out, I decided I want to raise them and immediately bought a tank from my nearest pet store. Sadly, without doing much research I purchased a 5.5 gallon tank for a hefty amount without knowing that they need a huge tank to survive.

Now I feel a passion to raise fishes, I realized that it makes me really happy to see my fishes swim around and eat the food I feed them. Recently, I ordered a 35 gallon tank, I know it is not an ideal size for the goldfishes. So I am thinking of giving it to my neighbor who has a 55 gallon tank.

What I was wondering if anyone can give me suggestion to what types of tropical fish would look good in my 35 gallon tank. And I was hoping I could have a variety of different colorful breeds to enliven my room.

I would abandon the thought of many different species and select a few. Perhaps 1 or 2 species of cories for the bottom and 3-4 species for the rest of the tank. Too many species and you will likely wind up with stressed unhappy fish.

Yes, find someone else for the goldfish. Assuming your friend has fish in the 55g(which really isn't big enough either) they probably wont do well in it, and very likely will cause his other fish to get sick.

Hi Cornstar,

Welcome to TFK. You're best bet is to take a sample of water to a pet store and have them test it for hardness and PH. Then you can figure out which fish will do well in your water parameters. Check out the tropical fish profiles at the top LH corner of the main page here.

And don't forget to cycle the tank first. Good luck :)
