My Ancient 125g tank

Hello all.
I have a 125 gallon tank that currently houses a small Arowana and a Black Ghost Knife. I am looking to add a bichir or rope fish/reed fish of some sort.
Is this possible with the BGK? I feel like I have read that you should only keep one eel like creature in a tank, and I feel like a bichir and knife fish might coincide with this.

Otherwise, any recommendations on a type of Bichir? An Ornate Bichir was at an auction I was at Saturday and it was beautiful, unfortunately I did not win the bid.

Please do not post if you are going to tell me the tank is too small for the Arowana.

I suggest you to go to aquadvisor.com and that will assist you, please bear in mind does not take into account, substrate, plants, rocks and or ornaments , which all take up space, hope this helps

it looks like you did make up your mind as you already tried to bid for a birchir.the birchir is a good fish for an aro tank.they eat the stuff that fall to the bottom keeping the tank clean.they seldom go on top where the aro usually is and they can hold their own in the tank.for a 125g a BGK and aro will take up quite a lot of space when they are adults.what type of aro are you keeping? a silver gets very long so it will need lots of top space.rays are nice in the tank but they are rather more sensitive to changes in the water.tin foils are common in the tank.i find they very sensitive towards changes in the water.they will be the first to die when the tank water is off.a good indicator fish for water quality in the tank.
rule of thumb when keeping an aggressive aro you'll need fast moving fish to dissipate the attacks on a particular fish.most of the time it will go for silver colored fishes.so a small group of them is good.

this comes from my personal experience.my aro has killed a lot of his tank mates before so i always keep at least 4-5 fast swimming fishes to keep him busy or he'll kill everything in his tank including the pleco.

They should be fine, provided one or the other isn't small enough to fit in the others mouth.


However, a 125 gallon, assuming a 6 foot tank, is still a bit small for a BGK. A 10 foot tank (or a 6 foot and wide tank) works much better for them. They get up to 18" long I think, and a 125 is 18.5" wide on the outside dimension.

I'm not sure. I've never seen one in any of the local stores. Your best bet is to look into any LFS that frequently handles Bichirs and ask them. Some pet stores may be able to custom order a fish for you.

Also if you go here: Tropical Fish for Freshwater Aquariums: Ornate Bichir you can technically order an ornate this way. I'm still mixed on if it's worth it or not. I suppose if the animal doesn't arrive dead they give you your money back or something.

The 125 is fine for the bgk.
That is interesting kitten as a guy I met at the auction kept and bred rays. I was thinking about getting one but I am not sure if my tank would be big enough. Some tinfoil barbs would be kind of cool though.
And yeah, it is a silver one.

As long as you provide some hiding spots like caves and tunnels for the bichir this sounds like a plan. They usually like space at the top so they can breath air.

I think with tunnels and caves you can really get away with this.


What kind of Bichir is it? Sang was suggesting an Ornate Bichir. She owns one and thinks a Gray would be too small to live with an aro.
