Mollies and guppies aren't exactly what I had in mind when I was thinking of livebearers. The splitfins (Goodeidae) and endlers are what usually come to mind; some of the Goodeids are even native to Florida. I think guppies, mollies, and platies are too overdone. You're going to have to ask someone else about the cichlids, tho.

We have hard-ish water with a PH of about 7.6-7.8, but both the sterbai and juli cories seem to be okay with that. I've researched the cories pretty intently for what will work best for us. It's the additional fish that stump me. I'm starting to think another schooling fish is the way to go, maybe danios or tetras (although that's what's in my other tank), but I'm okay with that. The focus of the tank will be the cories with them making up the larger school.

they will not do well in hard water but he's planning on keeping corries so the water has to be soft for the corries.secondly a pair ( mated pair )doesn't need to be in a large tank they can be kept in a smaller tank.

That's not a bad idea, either. I have a tank like that. The main focus is the substrate fish, and I just have a gourami and a school of tetra in there so I don't get the question: "so, where are the fish?"

Zebra Danio will work in hard water and so will Pristella Tetra and Bloodfin Tetra.

I agree. Breeders keep them in much smaller tanks.

That is why I said "In My Opinion".

People keep bettas in 1-2.5 Gallon tanks. That is accepted in the aquarium world...but I just don't think that's right.....you know.

I feel like the 5 gallon I keep my betta in can be quite small for him a lot of the times.

Hard-ish water....do you know the gH? You can call the water company and they can tell you. If they don't know what Carbon or General Hardness is, ask for Calcium or Magnesium Hardness.

Bronze Cories can do well in harder water. I have them in 18-20dGH water

18 - 30 dGH 320 - 530 ppm hard

Buenos Aires Tetra
Lemon Tetra
Congo Tetra

The majority of all others tetras will enjoy hardness below 12dGH which is softer water.
