Marineland Emperor 280

I recently setup my tank, partially, and have been letting the filter run with chlorine eliminator for several days upon arrival of some more sand for my tank. As listed above I have the Marineland Emperor 280 w/Bio-wheel. Let's just say it is rather noisey. I have it in my bedroom and the white noise from the hum blocks out a lot of other noise so I sleep great but I am worried the filter may have something wrong with it. Before anyone says there might be sand in the filter....there isn't. I checked to make sure the filter is resting securely and that all parts are fit together snug and proper. Am I the only one or are these things known to be a bit noisey?

I don't have exactly one of the those but my filters are noisey too, I think they are just normally that way.

My fiancee has a 20 gallon by aqueon that came with an aqueon filter. It is like night and day compared to mine. I realize size may play a role but hers is almost hard to hear unless you are beside it. Mine you can hear anywhere in our bedroom...

I run four of the Emperor 400's and two Emperor 280's. While they are not dead silent,, they are not what I would call loud and sometimes ,I must look and see that water is still entering the tank to ensure that they are running. I have found that if the J tube is pressed too firmly down onto the impeller that the filter is considerably louder than otherwise. Magnet goes on the bottom,and plastic fins on top when placed in the well that impeller is seated in.
Have also found that new filters,,sometimes become less noisier after a week to three weeks and that cleaning the impeller with brush provided ,,and the impeller housing,, with vinegar and HOT water will sometimes help considerably in the event the impeller and housing become coated with gunk which will happen. Hope some of this helps.

Also, how high is the water level in the tank? It's best to keep it as high as possible. That reduces the work load on the pump as well as reducing the distance the water falls back into the tank.
