Inappropriate fish living together, HELP!!!

Oh boy !!! Guppies.....I can actually speak to this issue haha.....When I read of your dilemma I thought I have 8 Serpae Tetras in with guppies without issues ...even though they are suppose to nip at them ....I use a web site aqadvisor .com to see which fish are compatable...I think your main problem is getting a new tank... you may as well name the tank now Inga's Guppy factory!!!! If you leave them in and reproduce and survive it was meant to be....from what I have read of your posts it sounds like you wanted to plan out you next tank..not be forced into one ...which ever way you choose.... welcome to Guppy motherhood!!!

Rewind...What I meant to say was.... the guppies may do fine with tigers.... of course take them out if theres a war...if the fry survies it was meant to be ....

So... Maybe I should hold off getting a new tank. Again today I came home expecting to see dead guppies but nope, they are just fine, swimming in the group with the Tiger Barbs, though they get left in the dust when the Barbs take off to the races, as they do. I just don't know what to do. I was looking for a tank anyhow, but as you said, I didn't intend it to be ASAP.

I also have no intention of breeding Guppies. I am pretty sure they are all boys from their brilliant color. Honestly, I have not researched them enough to be able to tell the difference. The only thing I saw about them said the boys are smaller, and brighter colored. I am sure these are babies as most fish sold in Petsmart are babies but they are definitely small and very bright colors. 2 Red, 2 Blue and 2 Yellow.

Another thought - have you offered them to the fish shop? Maybe they'd take them off your hands for store credit? Or let your sister buy your nephew a new tank to house them in, seeing as it was her mistake that put you in this dilemma?

If it were me, I'd be nervous that the fish could start to fight and it would adversely affect my enjoyment of the tank. I'd always be anticipating something bad when I checked on the fish, so I'd be better off without any potential incompatibility. If that isn't an issue for you, see how it goes until you can get another tank.

And remember, just because they appear happy doesn't mean they are happy. Boisterous fish will cause more sedate fish stress, even if they appear to be doing okay.

Yeah, that is a problem for me but one I sort of live with since I have OCD. I tend to be a bit on the "concerned side" of life. I am forever doing head counts, worrying that the filter isn't doing enough, the plants are not growing thick enough for fish to hide if they want, if the food I am feeding is good enough or if they need something else. I worried that my Gourami would be nipped to death by the Tiger Barbs, I worried that the Oto's would be eaten by the Shark. All these things I found out after getting these fish and later read they are not a good mix. So far, none of my worries have been founded, everyone gets along fine.

I don't know what worries me more. Keeping the 29 gallon I bought tonight to house the Guppies and having them start multiplying so fast I have to keep going back for more tanks, or leaving them in the big tank and have them get eaten by my other fish. They are gorgeous little fish.

I am still thinking about taking this tank back and getting a smaller size tank. I just don't know what to do. The other thought would be try to re-home my barbs and shark. I hate to do that too. Ugh!

Hope this helps - Sexing Platies, Guppies, Mollies and Swordtails - Aquarium Forum To sex your guppies you have to check to see if they have a gonopodium or a regular anal fin. Females will be larger and less finnage and have no gonopodioum. The picture shows it all.

I didn't know the Guppies were the same as the Platies. I can sort of tell on the Platies if they are just swimming about relaxed. When they get nervous or move quickly, they sort of tuck up and then they all look alike. I will have to check the Guppies tomorrow before I take this tank back. Find out if I need to start saving for a 100 gallon for all the babies or not. Here is to hoping for all boys.
