This is an odd question. I got my aquarium 6/13/12 off of craigslist. It's beautiful !! The , fella was showin me how everything worked (the filter and heater). And when I got it home, I put in a new filter cartridge, it's a Marineland size E that fits in the Bio-wheel Emperor 280. The tank also came with a plastic grey thing that opens up. It fits into the filter, but, I am confused about does the filter cartridge fit inside this plastic grey thing ?? I have actually tried to put the cartridge into the grey plastic thing, but it doesn't close/snap shut. Please HELP !!! Thanks in advance !!

Your filter will have 4 grooves in it 2 on each side, the grey thing is for storing carbon or other option media and will fit in one set of grooves while the filter cartridge fits in the other set of grooves, it makes sense when you open it up and look at it :D

Thanks SOOO MUCH !!! One more question though, Do I have to use this grey thing also along with the other cartridge? Or is that just some "Extra" help with the cycleing of the filter ? You know, like extra media for the filter to do more "filtering".

I'd planned to use the media trays with coral gravel to raise the pH in the Daffodil Pulcher tank.
They've spawned, though, and I'm leaving well enough alone.

You can add anything you want to the Grey trays, I have ceramic rings in mine on my 55g African Cichlid tank.

You can add a whole mix of stuff if you wanted, choices are endless.

Yup completely optional but most people put something or another in it - read above's xD
