I had never heard that green tiger barbs were "painted" before. According to this article
green varieties are simply a breed that's been hybridized over time to have that high pigment concentration that results in the Tyndall effect. I'm perfectly fine with hybrids and all that so long as it doesn't adversely affect the health of the fish and in this case I can't see any problems.
That said, I do like the green tiger barbs, but I have three words for the OP:
Black ruby barbs.
Absolutely gorgeous fish. They look very similar to tiger barbs but in my experience are a lot less nippy. Plus, when those males darken up, they're just stunning.
