You haven'yt mentioned the GH, KH and pH of your source water and tank water, nor how much "softening" you want to do, or for what fish. So on a very general basis, the easiest way to soften hard water is to dilute it with pure water (rainwater if it is safe where you live, RO, or distilled water). This reduces the hardness proportionally according to the amount, example half tap and half pure water will cut the hardness in half.
