how to soften aquariums

Has anyone used sera super peat granuals in thier aquariums, if so does it add a tint to the water,or what can I do to soften water cheaply

Why do you need to soften it? Any peat will color the water. IME very few tanks actually need to be softened, and if they do peat is not the most effective way to do it.

You haven'yt mentioned the GH, KH and pH of your source water and tank water, nor how much "softening" you want to do, or for what fish. So on a very general basis, the easiest way to soften hard water is to dilute it with pure water (rainwater if it is safe where you live, RO, or distilled water). This reduces the hardness proportionally according to the amount, example half tap and half pure water will cut the hardness in half. You can read a bit more here:
