African mbuna need to be overstocked to spread aggression, and they should be kept in groups of 1 male to 4 females. As a rough guide, you should have one fish per 2.5 gallons - with the dwarf mbuna such as yellow labs. Double the filtration you would think is a must - aim for 800+gph on a 55. Hard, alkaline water is a must, too - ph around 8.2, gh & kh 12.
Suitable tankmates for yellow labs are pseudotropheus acei, pseudotropheus saulosi, pseudotropheus polit, cynotilapia afra, iodotropheus sprengerae, Labeotropheous trewavasae - research, research, research! If you haven't had Africans before, stick with those above - they are the more mild tempered mbuna. Don't get species that look too similar - you will be sure to lose fish.
A lot of planning needs to go into African tanks. But they are worth it! :)
