yes, thanks Byron, I should have mentioned the negative effects of the erythromycin and been clearer that I was not recommending it, I wouldn't use it again for this

the Chemiclean, at least according to the packaging, is safe for nitrifying bacteria

Might be, I'm more concerned with any antibiotic entering the tank without very good reason. And without resolving the actual cause the cyanobacteria will return. Prevention is always better.
