Help me figure out which filter is best for me

So the current filter I have on my 40B just isn't cutting it and driving me crazy. I've decided to spend the money on a canister and just be done with it. I've narrowed it down to 3 filters and am not sure which would be best. The fish are angels, tetras, rams and cories. While I want what's best for the fish it has to be relatively quiet since it's in my room. I light buzzing won't bother me but a noise propeller will. So these are the 3 I'm looking at but am open to suggestions.


This one's rated up to 60G so I'm not sure if the current will be too strong but I do like this one the most because of all the options with it.


This is my next favorite and has great reviews. Also the price is better.


This is the third one. I will probably go with one of the other too unless someone convinces me otherwise. Ehiem do have a great reputation though.

People seam to always swear by Eheim, although I haven't really heard how they are better than another.

What about the old one isn't cutting it?

I made a filter for it using pvc and an water pump. There's a filter on one side of the tank and the pipe leads to the water pump on the other that pulls the water through the pipes under the sand. Well I think I used pipe that was too small because there's not enough water getting to the pump when it's in the pipe and the impeller makes an awful grinding noise. I can't take it out of the substrate without ruining the whole tank so rather than try to fix it I just want to replace it.

Somedude if it was me I would not get the Ecco Pro. I think it would put out too much current for your fish especially the Angelfish. Now as far as deciding between the Rena or the Classic 2211 well I can really answer that. I have a Classic 2213 and love it but it is also the only canister filter I have had. Now I have heard good things about Rena also. So if you like it and the price is right why not give it a try. I think both would work fine.

@Geomancer my understanding behind people going with Eheim is their reputation for lasting for many many years. Plus they have been around for such a long time.

Thanks Boredomb. How loud is the Eheim you have? I was wondering about the current being too much with the Ecco Pro. Some of the reviews I read had people saying how the current wasn't very strong and they had it on a 29g tank or something small but I figured they probably didn't know that much about fish either. I guess it's between the Rena and Eheim 2211 then. Anyone know if the flow is adjustable on either of them?

Unless I open the door on my stand and stick my ear next to the canister I cant hear it! Its that quite. Before I had it in this new stand it was sitting in the floor next to the old stand the tank was on. Now this was next to a chair in the living room and you still couldn't hear it. I have adjusted the flow on my eheim by moving the valve on output. I have no clue if you can adjust it on the Rena or not?
