Gourami Advice?

Im looking at stocking a 4ftx1.5ftx2ft tank. I currently have 2 opaline Gourami (1male and 1 female) and am looking at getting at least 2 more females so my boy doesnt start getting aggresive towards other new tankmates and his current female friend when he gets fully grown. So i have two questions!

Do you think getting 2 more female Gourami (im thinking the golden version) is a good idea, should i not or should i get more/less?
(im thinking two incase if i add 1 she would get bullied by one of my existing Gouramis)


What other fish would you reccomend for my tank?
(Im very fond of Corys, Platys, Dwarf Cichlids, Bolivian rams, Kribensis, Whiptail catfish so if any of them are compatible id be ecstatic!)

Whiptail catfish should be fine, as are the cories.

Rams might be ok, but not really sure. The ideal tankmates are calm, slow-moving fish... Rasboras (big enough to not get eaten) would be ideal.. Maybe something like a harlequin rasbora..

Yes, this is a good idea. The Blue, Gold, Opaline, Three Spot... are all the same species, Trichopodus trichopterus. If you click on the shaded name you will see the porofile with info. One male with 2-3 females is better for just the reason you mention. Females added should be OK, a male might have trouble, so make sure they are females.

I do not recommend cichlids with gourami. Both are very territorial fish and too much alike. I know it can sometimes work, but it also may not. Redchigh's suggestions are fine, there are several suitable species among the characins, rasbora. Just make sure they are not small. I have observed a couple of Blue Gourami in a store tank make very fast work of eating a neon tetra.

Thank you for the advice! Im glad my idea of adding more females is a good one. I havent had a look at rasboras before i shall look them up and yes i can imagine Neons wouldnt last long going by the size my boys mouth is already
