fish flake freshness

Hopefully this is just a quick easy one, I ordered some fish flakes from Foster and Smith. looks like 9.56 oz is about a year or more worth of food. So I have a smaller container that I refill from this big can, that way I dont have to open the big can as often. Should I keep the big can of food in the fridge to help keep it fresh? I wont be abel to use all this food probably within a year so at what point should I throw it away and get some fresh stuff? Not trying to be cheep here, just want whats best for my fishes while not being wastefull.

Just a side thought, what is the general opinion of O.S.I. freshwater aquarium flake food and Ocean Nutrition Formula One Flakes? and what flake comes highly recomended?

I don't think keeping it in the fridge will do much... I wouldn't buy more then you could use in 5-6 months and thats probably pushing it. It's always tempting to buy the bigger container because it's only like a dollar more for double the amount I hate it.

i think the main key to maintaining freshness is to keep the flakes dry. Once it gets kinda moist and gross, its time to throw it away. Just find a dry, dark palce to store it and it should last for a while

I agree - keeping it dry is key. Plus, look at it this way - in a few months you'll have a lot more fishtanks and more mouths to feed, right? ...Right?

Generally O.S.I. and Ocean Nutrition are very good fish food companies. Along with Omega One, I'd say they're pretty much top of the line. The only prepared food company I would say is "better" is New Life Spectrum, but that stuff can be hard to track down.
