First Freshwater Tank 29g wallmart tank.

Background: Moved into apartment in december, brother left behind 4 Goldfish in a 10 gallon tank. 2 of them died the remaining 2 are alive & well.

Issue: I simply do not have the heart to flush live Goldfish down the toilet to build a saltwater tank. I have decided to practice with a freshwater tank of 30 gallons (the 29g from wallmart). I want a spectacular freshwater tank, with live plants & as many fish a 30g tank can hold. I am cautious - looking for advise from experienced users on the forums to help guide me in the right direction. Negative & positive experiences welcome.

Hi,

What variety is your Goldfish? I'd avoid singletails such as comets and shubs though. Not really something for 29g tanks as they can reach 12" and over in size. Personally, my biased side tells you to get chubby orandas. I'd keep two only.

Freshwater with plants and saltwater are two different animals. However, becoming familiar with water testing and tank care in general with fresh water can set the stage for saltwater. Although sw does require a different approach.
Goldfish are cold water fish. They don't necessarily need a heater as long as the room is not too cold.
Tropical fish do need a heater and the the two, Goldfish and tropicals, should never be kept together in the same tank.
How big are these Goldfish? If they aren't huge and they aren't the kind that will get really big you may find it better to get them a 10 gallon and use the 29 for tropicals and live plants.

If you have the Goldfish that will permanently be able (by their size) to live in a 30g tank then I'd not add any more fish to that. Or you give them away and test what water you have (pH & KH) and you decide from there what fish to stock (we'll all gladly help with ideas).
Plants are super easy to keep, but you will need the right light and dep on your Goldfish keeping or not determine what you have there and what Temp they wanna live in and chose plants suitable from there.
