Swing, the point is we should end the fish's misery as soon as possible. Fish can't stand long agony over what befells it. Hence euthanasia is recommended.:)

Anyone here feels that decapitation is humane? I have stated previously that decapitation is rupturing the spine above the head to give the fish instantaneous death.

Thanks for the articles, Josh. It will certainly help us with questions involving fish feeling pains which many have argued that they don't. Now I can see why some people are opposing fishing.

You have to do that, Josh. This is only the way to end the fish's misery if ever it suffers a disease which you can no longer cure.

Some people will opposed to some methods so I'm trying to come up with more humane methods with the help of your opinions.

I have come up with the final 3 methods you may reconsider if you view them as humane.

Freezing Method
The majority of sites seem to choose freezing method as humane method however the fishforum.com seems to opposed this method.
So I guess freezing method should be consider as "inhumane".

Vodka/Alcohol Method
Another site says vodka method is inhumane. This is so because it "suffocates" the fish resulting in traumatic experiences for the fish.
Agree or disagree?

Decapitation/Swift Blow on the Head
This is often considered as the most humane but this seems a rather unpleasant method especially to those who are attached to the fish, soft-hearted or beginners.
This must be done quickly to become effective without making the fish struggle in agony.
This is often avoided by a majority of aquarists as this is very difficult to perform.

Decapitation works, if you swift and sure, which most people aren't. In most cases you end up with a fish flopping around on the table, or a bleeding mess of a fish that's still twitching. (Sorry for being so graphic.)

I would never decapitate my fish, even if the only other option would be to freeze it. Atleast freezing it won't cause the fish excruciating pain. If at all possible, though, use the clove oil and vodka method.

This can be a very touchy subject, and I know everyone has their own opinion on this. Whatever you decide to do to your fish, please make sure to do it in a humane way.
