Emerald cats

I sent off an email to my LFS to inquire about Emerald Catfish. They are placing an order to be received in late January and he is putting them on the list. That will work out well time wise for us and that will probably be the end of fish buying for a while. Of course this depends on if they are available to order at that time.

Which species? I hope they used the scientific name, or you may end up with either Brochis splendens or Corydoras aeneus.

I asked for them by the Emerald Catfish (Brochis splendens) and in his response he called them Emerald Brochis. I would imagine they are the same thing at that point. They have a high GH and pH tolerance and a fairly high temperature tolerance for a cat.

Looking forward to seeing them in the tank.

I looked those up in the profiles here and on another online source, and wow, they are really pretty! I saw some neon orange ones too that were really unusual and very pretty, but those emerald ones are quite cool looking. I hope you'll put a picture up!

Oh, yah!

I'm working on getting decent shots through the glass, video seems to work well as it is more dynamic. Fish are tough to shoot, particularly with digital as the auto focus is not designed to work that fast when the subject is that close. The range focus just doesn't work at all.

We were aiming for some colourful "show fish" but I am thinking that a half dozen of these flitting about the bottom are just as nice.

Could you plz post a pic lol i need to kno if the 2 that i got from my lfs are emeraod cats or cory mine are darker than the Bronze Cory but not as green as the pics on here they do have a green tint tho and thier dorsal fin goes all the way to the little fin befor the tail i think its a emerald and i really hope they are cause if not idk what ima do :-Q i wish i would have known for shure plzz help me identify

Colour wise though, no fish ever looks anything like it's full potential in a lfs. Once Home, happy and settled they will colour up.

Mine haven't shown up yet. If the dorsal is that long it is probably the correct fish. Did you buy them by "Emerald Catfish" or by "Brochis Slpendens" Or by "Emerald Brochis"? The first could be anything including the Bronze Cory, the other two, if the shop gets their names right, would be correct. The differences that are important to me are the higher hardness, pH and temperature range of the cat over the cory. Otherwise I wouldn't really care which I got colour and look wise.... I'd have been happy if I managed a Bandit Cory initially.

Here is a comparative pair of pics from the internet, they are good examples to be able to see the difference in the dorsal fin, otherwise, colouring could just be a variance between the fish specimens. The first is the Cory and the second is the catfish.

The little fin before the tail is the adipose fin. You can see that the top pic has many more fin rays (vertical lines) in the dorsal fin which is a trait of the Brochis genus.

I have a couple of Pepper Corys. They do such a good job of keeping the bottom 'clean'. When I pull the lights/hoods for the WWC, the one I place vertical on the side of the stand, leaning against the wall. As the light shines across the bottom, it becomes very apparent how they dimple the sand over the entire bottom.
At times, they'll just lay together on the bottom at the back of the tank...but when feeding, they're all over the place, sometimes apart, but most often together.
They're cute little buggers.
