Do fish like attention?

I want to set up a 20g in my room, but since I spend little time in there I don't want to get something that likes attention. Like anybody who has had a betta or Dwarf Puffer will get it, if you look at them they get all happy and look back at you and whatnot. When I look at my swamp darters I see them move their eyes to me and look, and to a lesser degree endlers and cautiously gouramis.

Maybe I'm just personifying them too much.

All fish will do fine without you. The only reason they have any interest in the aquarist is because food is associated with the aquarist.

I play chess with my beta from time to time and he gets a kick out of it. He usually wins and this makes me not want to be around him for a while. But I eventually come back and he is still happy to see me.

Most my fish get excited when they see me paying attention to them, and my bolivian rams knows the bag they get food out of, if I just pick it up with out walking towards them they get excited,

+1 - Pavlov's dogs... er fish - they associate our activity with getting food.
