dead fish! stupid heater!

woke up this morning to see both my gouramis dead and drifting around the filter intake! my heater just crapped out i guess while i was sleeping. the temp when i woke up was at 68 degrees, before bed it was closer to 80. so it dropped ten degrees before i woke up.
what kind of heater do you use? i'm afraid now because the heater in my 55 gallon that i'm cycling (fishless) is one a friend gave me. i'd like to buy a new one now. do they make automatic ones? is there anything that's better than the rest?

What brand did you use? I used Sera myself with no issues. Many people do vouch for Visitherm Stealth and Eheim. Go to Product, Service and Equipment Reviews section for some heater threads.:)

better yet don't have just one. If you need 500W then get 2 250W instead of one 500W.

just an example. also if one got stuck on it wouldn't over heat as fast.

IMO that is what I would do.
