Confused about getting an aquarium.

Hi,

I'm a beginner with fish and aquariums. I went to an aquarium center in Wigan where I now live, and got some advice but I'm confused. The shop owner told me, that although it is good for people on a budget, to forget buying one of those cheap start-up kits with everything all-in because if something brakes (like the light), there's a chance that I won't be able to get the parts for it.

He suggests buying a tank and buy everything else (i.e., filter, light, heater, etc) separately. It would cost more money to do that but if something brakes at least it can be replaced.

But I'm on a budget of about £80 and I've seen the start-up kits for about £50 at The Range.

I've looked for second-hand tanks but I have yet to find one where I live (I do not own a car). I'm just eager to get a fish tank.

Any suggestions?

I'm a beginner too, so might have some people disagree with me but I don't see a problem starting out with a start up kit. Take your time and shop around, look at the customer comments on the kits. I've taken quite a while to find a starter kit that is good quality and also has a warranty on it, so if something breaks the first year you get it replaced for free. Even on the off chance that something would break you could always just replace that one part. Buying everything individually doesn't mean that it won't break or work as you want it too. Once you get more into aquariums you can see what kind of filters, lights and other accessories that you like and can change out things when you want to or start a completely new tank. Good luck and keep us posted. I know I can't wait to get my new aquarium.
