Canister Filter Media For HEAVY planted tank

Its christmas time!

I am getting a canister filter from my girlfriend for xmas, first time im gonna have one woo!

However, she wants to know what else she should get with it in terms of media.

I have read places that i shouldnt use carbon?

Not TOOO sure,

If anyone can help me out with what to place in my media baskets ( it has 3 ) that would be fantastic.

I have an EHIEM 2213 on my 29gal and also an AQUA CLEAR 50 on it. I don't have carbon in either of the filters. In the AQUA CLEAR I have "Chemi-pure".

For heavily planted tank you want nothing chemical, carbon, "chemi-pure". These things are not wanted on most tanks IMO, planted or unplanted. For you canister, first basket all regular large pore sponges/pot scrubbers. Next basket smaller pore sponges and you can have some ceramic noodles or similar if you want. Top basket fill with a bunch of filter floss.

The only things I would use in it are filter floss and (if you want amazon or soft water) peat.


For a while I used organic choice potting soil as a filter media to release nutrients... Seemed to work, but I don't know if you should do it for your first tank.
