API Master Test Kit Question

I was lucky enough to receive the API Freshwater Master Test Kit for Xmas.

I've been testing regularly this week as I've just set up a new tank and added fish.

I was re-reading the instructions for the Nitrate test, and noticed that they indicate that "The Freshwater Nitrate Test Color Chart is the appropriate chart to use for testing freshwater aquariums to which salt has been added."

I would assume that it is also ok to use this chart if no salt has been added to the aquarium?

Yes. Also make absolutely certain for the test where it says to shake, that you shake the reagent bottle/test tubes very well, or you'll get incorrect results!

I think that just means that if you have a FW tank that you have added salt to, as some people do because they think it is good for fish and prevents illnesses (that's a whole other topic) then you still use the FW chart rather than the SW chart.

My best advice to you would be to shake shake shake it baby!!!!!! To get an accurate result from the same kit I have to shake the NITRATE bottle for at least 3 minutes, it says much less on the bottle but I've had inaccurate results from only shaking it for 1 minute
