Angelfish Question

About two months ago, I redid the stock of my 55 and some of the aquascape. I ended up with 5 Angelfish, a Bristlenose Pleco, some Cardinal Tetra and a couple species of Cory Cats. The Angelfish did well together for about a month and now just recently two of five started hiding a lot. Over the last week I have lost both of them. All of the other fish in the tank are doing well, water parameters check out normal and there are no signs of disease. My first thought is that my Angels are pairing off, but the third Angel shows no signs of stress and is swimming among the other two with no issues. What is going on here? If this is pairing off, why would the third Angel not be affected? In the profile it says I should keep at least 5 Angels, but I have read elsewhere, not to introduce new Angels to a tank with an established pair. Should I let it ride or try to increase my stock?

Before considering whether or not to add angels, try to ascertain the reason for losing 2 of them. How did the 5 interact when the 2 began hiding and following? Any changes in feeding?

At first when I got them, they all swam mid to top level in a loose grouping and fed very aggressively. After about a month the two I lost were always hiding near the bottom of the tank behind pieces of driftwood, while the others continued there normal behavior. They also were not nearly as aggressive when feeding. Mostly just grabbing pieces that fell to them and occasionally sneaking up to the water level in the corners of the tank that are well covered with Valsineria. The three remaining rush to the front of the tank every time I approach it. I strongly feel that the other two were subject to some bullying, but I did not witness it for myself.

That would suggest it. As all other fish are fine, likewise. Under these circumstances, I would leave the 3 on their own. Adding new angels is almost certainly going to lead to increased aggression from one or more of the three. Assuming your reasoning is the issue; nothing else is obvious.
