No. Zeolite is excellent for removal of toxic ammonia. You can leave the filter alone even after the ammonia is deleted and use the crystals as a bio-bed.
IMHO chemical filtration should not be employed except in anomalous situations which are fairly rare.
IMHO I would procure and utilize the ceramic cylinders in your typical filtration process.
