Water pump - above or below water level

Hi, this may sound like a lame question but if the water pump outlet is above the water, does this help in terms of oxygenation of the water etc?

With it being below the water it causes quite a current which sometimes blows the fish around ;)

The water output above the waterline will just put a lot of bubbles in the tank, but not really help with oxygenating the water. The turbulence on the water surface causes the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. This may create just as much turbulence in the water.

A lot of filters have a setting on them where you can adjust the flow.

I wouldn't put it outside the water as this causes more turbulence as I find out every time i remove any water from my tank and forget to sitch the filter off first.

If it's too forceful, and you can't adjust the setting, position it so that the flow first hits off the wall of the tank - this should lessen it a good bit.
