next question....this needs to be able to support my entire tank(which its well capable of doing)...right now i"m just running the blue media pad in there....I'm trying to colonize the bacteria seeding from my two HOB filters....how is this possible when there's nothing to hold the good media......

it came with a biowheel looking thing to fit inside the blue media pad.....should I add this to let it pick up the good bacteria off my biowheels???
I also have the Marineland Magnum. I run it with the white diatom filter inside. I find that for me it works really well at "polishing" the water, keeping it crystal. +1 to Harri as far as the plants & substrate providing the bio filer. Just my 2 cents.

Glad you got your problem solved!

Do you run the bio-wheel inside the canister also? right now all thats in there is the black container to hold the carbon and the blue filter pad....

i'm thinking of just switching to the biowheel and ditching the black plastic which holds the carbon...

No, I don't. I just use the diatom filter on its own. I had to purchase it separately as mine didn't come with it.

By the "biowheel" are you talking about the micron filter thingy?

Part #14 in the parts list. You don't need to run that all of the time (actually it'll get clogged pretty quick if you do). I would just run the carbon cage thing full of ceramic rings with the blue filter sleeve thing on the outside of that.
