Ok so being that were discussing more is better, would I be better off with a larger sponge? I imagine they make larger ones for a reason.

Bigger is better, but there is also the law of diminishing returns. There comes a point at which adding size does not translate to added benefit. In my own experience with massive filtration systems, bigger means I don;t have to clean them as often, and that's a benefit that keeps giving.
