TDS meter

Sorry if this has been posted before i'm sure it has (i did look around for one)
I just got a tds meter and have no idea what its for or how to read it. I think it is to test how soft the water is but what is a good reading? i dipped it in my tank and got a reading of 340 is that high low or spot on for a discus set up?

Where did you get it? does it have a brand? If it has a brand then look it up on the Internet and you might find out what you need.
