I currently have a Ehiem 2217 on a 55gal heavily planted tank. It also has an UGF that I want to remove. But everytime I turn off the UGF I get that protein scum at the surface. I'm trying to decide how to get rid of the scum. I already tried aiming the spray bar toward the surface but that didn't seem to help. Plus I'm afraid it would cause too much agitation. What do you planted aquarium specialists recommend. For those that use surface skimmers, can you tell me the pros and cons? What brand you use?
Thanks! Looks like not too many people use surface skimmers. My concern with the skimmer was what if it clogs with dead leaves, etc. I don't want air to get into the canister filter. I've also heard skimmers can suck up fish.
So I guess I'll go with my second option which is to add a HOB filter just to break the surface tension. I already have an extra HOB that I used to use on a 29gal.
