A tough call that could go either way on larger tanks, even for Fresh Water.
I like the idea of a canister over a sump because they're less muss 'n fuss. However, with a sump comes the potential for wet/dry, hiding heaters, deep sand, refugiums, etc. Although debris filtering is more limited due to the overflow.
However, I think most commercial sumps are overdone and too expensive. If I was gonna go sump, it would be DIY - as there are some pretty ingenious sump setups I've seen that have been done for less than half the cost of a decent canister filter.
Bottom line, if it was bigger than 125, I think I'd go with a sump, even for FW, but in this case, I'd likely use a high quality canister.
