sponge filter maintenance

How often should a sponge filter be rinsed? I have not rinsed filter as yet because tank is still cycling but I think I need to go ahead and rinse. I have green algae growing on the tube and the top of the filter. I think the algae is a result of the orginal incandescent lights. I switched to flourescent last Monday so hopefully this will slow growth down.

To clean a sponge filter, when you do a water change, unhook the ilter from the air, put it in the water you just pulled from the tank. Squeeze it a couple of times, then put it back in the tank and hook it back up. Done. Easiest thing in the world. Squeezing it out in used aquarium water gets and debris out of it without removing the beneficial bacteria.

Logic is only the beginning of wisdom

squeeze gently and slowly, like the bad guy in an action movie about to try to kill the good guy by squeezing slowly around the neck.
