Unhappy Shopping for a used aquarium, not fun...

I've been looking for a "new" used aquarium for almost 3 weeks, nothing. I've been digging on craigslist and kijiji, nothing.
This is my 1st time buying a used aquarium so I'm going by this guide I found on another forum to set the guidelines for my search and give a fair offer to sellers.
Link removed- it is against our forum rules to post links to other forums, sorry. -Olympia.

The search has been quite frustrating. I'm looking for a 36" long aquarium, which from what I've seen is a 33gal, with a stand and hood. If there's a filter, heater, airpump, I'm going by the guide and taking 25-40% of the retail value. So going by the guide, I should be looking at $33 tank, $33 stand, bit extra for the hood, so roughly $70-75 total (that's a fair price, not bargain CL price). But from what's on CL in my area, this type of setup has an asking price of $150, $200, $300, none of which have high-end lighting, filter which could justify the price. In fact, a lot of "tanks w/ stand" is a dusty aquarium plunked on top of an old TV stand or an old dresser, then a whole bunch of leftover water tests, expired fish food, various ugly ornaments.
Am I asking too much?? For the $200 sellers are asking, I could go to a certain large chain retailer and buy a 29 gal kit and a nice stand for $180 with tax! But I really want the extra darn 6 inches for my fish and a 33 gallon new would be $250+.
According to aquarium hobby forums, the general rule of thumb is 30% of retail for used equipment so I'm trying to go by that. Does anyone have any experience in searching for aquariums on CL? Any advice??

Recently, there was a seller offering me a tank & hood w/ a steel stand for $85 absolutely firm. I would prefer a wooden stand because I'm putting the aquarium in my living room. However, he had also purchased the tank used, he guessed it was around 5 yrs old. Is there a risk to purchasing a used, used tank?? And he lives an hour and 20 min drive away, so 3 hours there and back! Do you think this is a good deal??

If anyone has comments on what to expect when sifting through CL, tips on inspecting used tanks, experience w/ selling or buying used aquariums, please post!! I'd appreciate it a whole lot.

I have always bought my tanks used and I think that the great deals are always in bigger tanks. Many factors play too. If it's a brand tank with equipment , hood, light , heater and a decent stand for 100 $ and you deal to have it delivered it'S a decent deal.

Considering how often petsmart does $1/gallon sales on tanks, not sure $1/gallon is a great deal on a used tank unless it's something out of the ordinary. All in all this guide makes me feel better about the 35 gallon hex tank with stand that I picked up for $50. It came with a light, filter, heater, air pump, stones, decorations.... but they were all in pretty rough shape. I'm only using the tank, stand and light. Still according to that guide I did ok. I found a lot of similar issues you did with craigslist, many people asking way too much, but once in a while somebody prices one to sell.

Lately I've been searching craigslist and Ebay Classifieds (my favorite since they have a lot of live animals on there) and have had very little problems finding large fish tanks and for very good prices. Although i haven't found a 33 gallon, 36 inch long tank. I have found tanks around 55 gallons with a stand included along with a filter, heater, the light, and sometimes decorations or even fish too for about $100-$200. Maybe try looking for a slightly bigger tank? with such a specific set of wishes it would make it harder to find just what you are looking for.

I've seen people get tanks terribly cheap on here. However I think this depends on where you are. Used tanks here sometimes cost more than new set ups. Personally, I'd go for a new set up over used if it was a matter of $30 or similar, there are some gambles, especially if the tank is empty, filters not running, lights don't get plugged in before you buy them/there's no bulb. If possible, ask the person to see any products on and running before buying.
Hope that helps.

Try free cycle. The Freecycle Network I got a 20 long on there for freewith tank stand and canopy and filter...takes a long time to find what you want but you can't beat the price. C this is the first post on my new phone so forgive the errors...

I agree. I bought an all new tank because it was on sale for about $40 off and that made it cheaper than most of the others I saw. I only consider buying ones that I can see a picture of and if it looks decent in the picture
